Abstract oil paintings are never simply a collection of shades with pointless patterns and shapes. Abstract oil painting originated from abstract art, which is some kind of art style. However, abstract art is not sprang from the twentieth century, during which period abstract oil painting came out, developed and went grown.

Abstract oil painting could be dated from early twentieth century authentically. Unlike these conventional schools of painting, abstract oil painting seems to be irrational, frenzy, and even in chaos; we can not define it as something may be understood or not briefly. With regards to shapes and patterns, there are the abstract oil paintings of Jackson Pollock, Howard Hodgkin and Peter Lanyon.  When you attempt to analyze their artworks, those will encourage your mind to think and analyze.  Hodgkin style is like puzzles in a canvas and it will undoubtedly take a viewer sometime to take their eyes away from it.  But mainly because there are only very few outlined parts on the works of art, some experts may seem to find them as empty of meaning or no meaning at all.
 
This only means that no one meaning can be made in an artwork.  Some may have positive response but there are still others that may think negatively.  It will just be inspired on their way of thinking or their current sense of thinking.  You may take a splash of red in a canvas, some may think of it as blood or danger, but some will think of it as love and power.  Everything is just based mostly on the state of mind of the viewer.
